Fire Evacuation Chairs

An easy, fast and safe solution to evacuate people from a building

The EVAC+CHAIR®  provides a smooth and controlled descent

In the event of an emergency, employers and building managers have a legal responsibility for the safe and swift evacuation of every person in the building; this will include employees, visitors, and contractors.

Regular fire evacuation drills are of paramount importance to ensure employees can follow the evacuation procedure and any potential issues with the procedure can be highlighted and addressed.

All emergency evacuation plans should ensure that people with mobility impairment either visible (e.g. wheelchair users) or hidden (e.g. asthma sufferers, back injuries, arthritis, heart conditions etc…) are able to evacuate the building at the same time as other occupants. If some people are left in a refuge area while the rest of the building is being evacuated, the evacuation plan must have a procedure to transfer them from the refuge area to safety without relying on fire brigade intervention.

Since its introduction in 1982, EVAC+CHAIR® has become the market leader with thousands of chairs installed in offices, hotels, shops around the world.

EVAC+CHAIR® is a single person operation evacuation chair that does not require any lifting and provides a smooth and controlled descent.

How does it work?

The friction belts grip the nosing of the stairs providing a smooth descent while the passenger’s weight provides a gentle braking action. For travelling in corridors EVAC+CHAIR® has a kickstand that will immediately transform the chair into a wheelchair. Before going down the stairs the kickstand has to be folded away.

Is it hard to operate?

No. The chair is light and highly manoeuvrable and the passenger’s weight is supported by the stairs and not the operator.

Do you need to be trained to use EVAC+CHAIR®?

Although the chair is easy to use, Chubb recommends training to be provided as it will give the operator the opportunity to understand their role and gain confi dence in using the chair. We recommend for initial practice to use a passenger who weighs less than the operator.

Where should EVAC+CHAIR® be positioned?

EVAC+CHAIR® should be easily accessible and positioned by the emergency exit without hindering the escape route. It is recommended to have an EVAC+CHAIR® by the fire exit on each floor as the person that will need to be evacuated may move around the building.

Does EVAC+CHAIR® go up steps?

No. EVAC+CHAIR® has been designed to meet the most common type of evacuation which is down steps. Although one of the models has handles for lifting the chair over obstacles or a few steps.

Is EVAC+CHAIR® suitable for spiral staircase?

No. The width of EVAC+CHAIR® exceeds the turning diameter of the staircase.

Is EVAC+CHAIR® delivered with fixing brackets?

Yes. EVAC+CHAIR® is delivered with wall fixing brackets, dust cover and a photoluminescent ID sign. The chair should be hanged from the thinnest black bar at the rear and approximately 15 cm off the floor.

Please note that the Fire Brigade do not have a legal responsibility to evacuate people from a building. This responsibility lies with the employer and building manager.
