Your requirements under Disability Discrimination Act

Part III of the DDA states that service providers, such as hoteliers and suppliers of sleeping accommodation are legally obliged to make provision for guests who are disabled, and this includes the deaf and hard of hearing.

Deafgard

On of the main concerns for service providers who have people sleeping in their premises is how to alert the deaf and hard of hearing to a fire alarm sounding when they are sleeping.  Deafgard offers a wire free, moveable and cost effective solution.  Deafgard is an acoustically activated bedside unit that incorporates an epilepsy friendly strobe and a connected vibrating pillow pad that you place under a pillow.  In the event of an alarm activating, the pillow pad starts to vibrate and awakes the sleeper.  The flashing strobe and LCD provides visual indication that the fire alarm is sounding.  The unit is stand alone and does not require any wiring in to the fire alarm system.

In the event of a fire alarm:

  • The Deafgard will pick up the sound
  • The under pillow pad will vibrate
  • The strobe light will activate
  • The word FIRE will be displayed on the LCD screen

The Deafgard unit can be kept at the reception area of the premises and can be handed out to guests at check in.  The receptionist should test the unit, and show the guest how to operate it.  The Deafgard unit also has an alarm clock facility.  The unit is portable so no need for designated rooms.
