6. Mechanical/Automotive

Guidance for Candidates

The external assessment for the Mechanical/Automotive sector is split into two sections.

Section A is worth 45 marks and Section B is worth 55 marks.

Section A will include a range of general questions relating to Unit 3, Application of Technology.

For Section B you should carry out research into mass-produced fire extinguishers.  Investigate the impact and use of the following technologies in the design and production of the fire extinguishers:

  • ICT, including: handling information and data, process control, designing and manufacturing techniques such as CAD and CAM;
  • Modern materials and components including: polymers, coatings and metals;
  • Control technology, including: process control, automation, computer integrated manufacture (CIM) and robotics.
    Your investigation should include the stages in making the product.

Candidates should be able to:

  • Name components and explain their use.
  • Understand the use of modern and smart materials, including polymers, metals and composites, in a range of products from this sector.
  • Understand the application and benefits of using a range of systems and information communications technology (ICT) to organise, monitor and control production.
